National Junior Honor Society

The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding middle level students. More than just an honor roll, NJHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character—all characteristics of the organization since its beginning in 1929.

The Timberline chapter of NJHS is a student-run organization. Members participate in community service projects sponsored by the organization, provide collegiality, motivation, and support in the pursuit of the highest of standards.

Timberline’s Honor Society is open to 8th grade students who maintain a 3.5 GPA and fully complete an application at the end of their 7th grade year.

Application Process

In April, 7th grade students who have maintained a 3.5 GPA or better will receive an invitation to join NJHS. Students who fully complete an application by the due date will be considered for membership. 7th grade students who are admitted will attend an Induction Ceremony in May and attend their first NJHS meeting in the fall of their 8th grade year.

Membership Requirements

Members of the Timberline NJHS will be expected to:

  • Attend the NJHS Induction Ceremony
  • Maintain a GPA of 3.5 or above
  • Volunteer 10 hours per semester
  • Attend all NJHS meetings (1 per month, during FLEX)
  • Follow the PACK way and exemplify good character

Community Service

Any activity that benefits the community, that you do without being paid, can count toward service hours. You should be supervised by an adult. Community service can also be performed at school with a teacher supervising. Some ideas: volunteer your time at a retirement home, community center, food bank, animal shelter, school or church. Participate in activities like picking up litter, coaching sports/extracurriculars, cleaning up a local park, collecting and organizing donations or preparing food for a homeless shelter. If you are wondering if an activity counts, please reach out to the NJHS advisors.

Hours completed over the summer count toward the next year’s requirements!  Track your hours using the following: NJHS Service Hours Tracking Sheet.

Officer Elections

Students can choose to run for NJHS President, Vice President or Secretary. Interested students will fill out an application and write a short speech. During our October meeting, students will give their speeches and voting will take place. The selected students will take on a lot of responsibility for NJHS, including running monthly meetings, taking attendance, and organizing school wide fundraisers.
